ADAS Technologies

 

mm Wave Radar-long range radar used for adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance systems. Optional on many vehicles beginning in model year 2015; standard equipment on most vehicles from model year 2019 and newer. The radar unit requires calibration and/or programming when replaced

 

Forward Facing Camera– high resolution cameras, typically mounted on the upper portion of the windshield. Used for lane departure warning, lane keep assist and some adaptive cruise control applications. Optional on many vehicles beginning in model year 2013; standard equipment on most vehicles from model year 2019 and newer. The camera(s) require calibration and/or programming when they are replaced or relocated.

 

Short Range Radar– short range radar used for blind spot detection, including cross-traffic alerts. Optional on many vehicles beginning in model year 2012 and standard equipment on most vehicles beginning in model year 2018. The radar units require calibration and/or programming when they are replaced.

 

Surround View Camera– multi-camera systems used to display a 360 degree view around the vehicle. Optional on many vehicles beginning in model year 2016. The cameras must be calibrated when replaced.

 

LIDAR– next-generation object detection technology, utilizing laser imaging, providing the vehicle with a three-dimensional view of the surrounding landscape. Currently only used on certain premium applications, but soon to be mainstream as the costs come down. The LIDAR unit must be calibrated when replaced.

 

Ultrasonic Sensors– normally used for parking sensor systems and have been in production since the early 2000s.

 

Night Vision– thermal imaging technology used for adaptive cruise control and object avoidance. Optional equipment on several premium brands since the late 2000s. Requires calibration when replaced.
